Important Things To Know For Your Italy Vacation
Visit Cities in Italy:
Florence
Rome
Sicily
Venice

The Roman Empire sprouted from a small agricultural community that was founded on the Italian Peninsula. Italia (as it was once known) was not a province but referred to the territory of the city of Rome with a special status. When the Roman Empire fell, the western half of the empire, including Hispania, Gaul, and Italy, broke into independent governments in the 5th century. The eastern empire was known as the Byzantine Empire, a kingdom that would be warred for by Germany and Ostrogoths, among others. For centuries, what we now know as Italy would be dominated by feuding city-states, tyrannies and foreign invaders. The Italy of today is the result of a Second Republic, started in 1992 and lasting till present. Italy is run by a parliamentary republic today and continues to be the center of the Catholic Church, just as it was once the center of Western Civilization, under Roman control. It is also a member of the European Union and the United Nations Security Council.

If you are traveling to Italy, then you will most likely be taking the national airline Alitalia. If you are traveling from inside Europe, then you may also travel via train or by car. Another method is traveling to Italy by boat, such as with ferry services. What is the climate like in Italy? Coastal regions usually have a Mediterranean climate, meaning hot and dry summers but with mild winters. Italy has frequently changing weather in the fall, winter and spring seasons, unlike the summer, which is fairly settled. The winter season will bring a mix of rainy days and mild sunny skies. If you want to cool down and don't mind some rain then November is your best month, whereas July is the driest but also the hottest in temperature.

What is there to do in Italy? It depends on what region you find yourself in. The most populated location is the Northern region, with cities like Turin, Milan, Verona and Venice. Central Italy is known for its rich history and outstanding art collection. Rome, Italy is an historical landmark and contains many artifacts from the glory days of the Roman Empire. There are also the Italian Islands, made up of beautiful Sardinia and Sicily. If you are an art lover then visit Florence, Tuscany. If you love natural wonders of the world then Naples, with its Vesuvius volcano will interest you.

What many tourists note about Italian cuisine is that it is very different from the American version of Italian food. The food, language and culture in Italy will differ by region. For example, pasta and olive oil (what many think of as Italian food) is characteristic of southern Italian food, whereas northern food involves more rice and butter. Italian Wine is also a great tourist attraction, and not surprisingly, since this quality wine is the most exported all over the globe.

A trip to Italy is not only an historical and enlightening experience, it is also one that can be rich and colorful-even more so than a glass of Tuscany's own Chianti.
