Enjoy a Tranquil Vacation on Rhodes
Rhodes is the largest city in the South Aegean Islands of Greece. On Rhodes, visitors will find everything from spectacular beaches to a bustling metropolitan city complete with every imaginable convenience. There is also no lack of historical sites to explore, as is the case with most cities in Greece, providing the perfect opportunity to soak up some sun and culture at the same time.
On the island of Rhodes, there are actually several cities. The largest is Rhodes city, home to many of the hotels on the island. A number of the cities on Rhodes are more villages; however, they offer a tranquil and slower pace of life that can be quite relaxing. Pefkos is known as a popular resort while Faliraki is the place for action and nightlife on Rhodes. For resort hotels and some of the best snorkeling in the area, consider Kalithea. Golfers may want to consider one of the larger islands, Afandou, where a golf course is situated near an extensive beach.
Hotels & Resorts
From budget hotels to lavish resorts, there are numerous accommodation options on Rhodes. On the northern and eastern coastlines, you will find high-rise hotels while resorts are situated in some of the smaller villages. For visitors looking for quiet and seclusion, there are also several inns and bed and breakfasts situated around the island. Many of the most popular hotels are located in Old Town; however, you should be aware that because they are popular they are often booked well in advance of travel dates.
Lindos is also a popular destination on Rhodes, especially during the high season. Here, you will find that a large number of former residences have been converted into villas due to the fact that no hotel construction is allowed in Lindos.
Restaurants
Across the island, visitors will find a number of fabulous restaurants. Due to the fact that most of the food served in the restaurants is grown right on the island, you can generally count on fresh food. Seafood is particularly popular and there are a number of restaurants that specialize in fresh seafood.
Many of the restaurants on Rhodes are located in the Old Town section of Rhodes City. Visitors will discover there are numerous world class restaurants on Rhodes, offering plenty of opportunity for fine dining. There are also many friendly small neighborhood eateries, known as tavernas, that offer fabulous foods as well and for not much money.
Attractions
Rhodes is considered to be something of an international playground and is practically awash with entertainment venues. The Municipal Art Gallery of Rhodes offers a collection of artwork that is quite impressive. Several other museums throughout the island offer an array of artifacts including rare maps, engravings and antiques. You can usually purchase a combination ticket at any of the museums that will allow you to gain entrance to all of the museums using the same ticket.
Dining & Nightlife
There is certainly no lack of nightlife on Rhodes. In fact, second to Athens, Rhodes is considered one of the liveliest cities in Greece after dark. There are no less than 100 nightclubs located throughout Rhodes; however, many of them are situated in what is known as New Town. This is where the large majority of discos, bars and pubs are located on Rhodes. In addition to the array of clubs and discos, the café scene is also quite lively, providing a way for locals and tourists alike to sit back and socialize as well as people watch.
As is the case throughout most of the rest of Greece, gambling is a popular nighttime activity on Rhodes. Visitors and locals looking to get in on some of the action frequently head to the thoroughly modern casino situated near Eli beach.
Historical Attractions
For sightseeing, be sure to head out to Old Town, where you can easily spend a day exploring the charming lanes that wind throughout this village. The walls of Old Town enclose the oldest inhabited township in Europe. Making your way through the many gates of this part of town is certainly a thrill, especially as you come upon the ruins of the Temple of Venus. It is believed that the votive offerings in this ancient temple may date back to the 3rd century B.C.
Getting Around
For arrival on Rhodes, visitors have a few choices. The only airport that serves the island is Diagoras International Airport. Regular flights are offered from Athens as well as Crete. Charter airlines also connect Rhodes with most of the major European cities. The Commercial Port at Old Town also receives cruise ships docking on a regular basis. Ferry service is available from Bodrum, Tilos and Symi as well as Marmaris, Turkey.
Public transportation travels throughout Rhodes. You can easily purchase a ticket directly from the driver. Taxi service is also widely available and is a preferential form of travel for many people visiting Rhodes. In most cases, it is less expensive to simply hail a taxi rather than to call one ahead of time; although calling ahead can help you to avoid delays.
When exploring many of the towns and villages of Rhodes, especially Old Town, you should be aware that driving and cars are restricted in many areas. In Old Town, there is a parking lot situated near the Temple of Venus where you can park your vehicle and then easily explore on foot, which is actually quite preferable. |
