The JetBlue chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association voted to approve a letter of agreement that “protects all JetBlue pilots from involuntary furlough — under any circumstances — until May 1, 2021,” said the union memo, which was seen by CNBC. The airline had more than 3,600 pilots, according to its 2019 annual report.

The union agreed to “short-term changes” with an “earlier snapback if demand for flying recovers,” said the memo, but it was not immediately clear what changes the union and the airline reached. The memo said there aren’t changes to collective bargaining agreement pay rates or “significant modifications” to work rules.

The union and JetBlue didn’t immediately comment.

United Airlines is planning to add about 25,000 flights in August, hoping to capitalize on an uptick in air travel, particularly to leisure destinations ranging from Bozeman, Montana, to Bangor, Maine.

The Chicago-based carrier and its competitors are seeing an uptick in travel demand from the five-decade lows hit in April as the Covid-19 pandemic took hold in the U.S.

“While travel demand remains a fraction of what it was at the end of 2019, customers are slowly returning to flying, with a preference for leisure destinations, trips to reunite with friends and family, and getaways to places that encourage social distancing,” United said in its announcement on Wednesday.

Even with the increase in flights, United will be flying about half of its August 2019 domestic capacity and a quarter of the international service it operated last year. In comparison, this month it plans to fly about 30% of its domestic service as the same month last year, and just 16% of international service, the airline said.

The virus, and the measures taken to try to stop it from spreading, have shuttered key tourist attractions and prompted stay-at-home orders, devastating air travel. The number of people passing through U.S. airport security checkpoints in June was around a fifth of last year’s levels, according to the latest federal data.

It was not immediately clear whether United would tweak its plans for additional trans-Atlantic service because the European Union continues to bar Americans from travel amid the pandemic.

China’s struggle against the economic overhang of the coronavirus is far from over.

Renewed limits on social activities has dampened the pace of recovery, as evident from the nearly 69% drop in tourism revenue during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival that officially ended Saturday.

The restrictions are primarily in Beijing, where authorities increased social distancing measures and tightened scrutiny on travel in and out of the capital city after a cluster of Covid-19 cases emerged just two weeks before the holiday. Nationwide, many scenic spots are still capping visitors at a fraction of total capacity.

This year, the roughly 48.81 million tourist trips during the festival brought in revenue of 12.28 billion yuan ($1.73 billion), according to China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism. That marked a drop of 68.8% from the 39.33 billion yuan in tourism revenue during the festival last year, which fell in early June. Nearly 95.98 million tourist trips were made then, according to official figures.

“Tourism and other activity data from the past Dragon Boat Festival holiday (25-27 June) suggest that the recovery in services sector remains weak for some understandable reasons,” Ting Lu, chief China economist at Nomura, said in a note. He pointed to increased social distancing measures and consumer confidence “clouded by elevated uncertainty and high unemployment rate.”

“Due to the travel bans (a)lmost no cross-border trips were made during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday this year,” Lu said. “These data suggest no significant improvement from the Labour Day holiday (in May).“

Covid-19 first emerged late last year in the Chinese city of Wuhan. In an attempt to control the spread of the disease, more than half of the country extended a Lunar New Year holiday shutdown by at least a week in February.

While the outbreak stalled within weeks and much of the country resumed work by April, China faced the new challenge of travelers bringing the virus into the country from overseas. The spread of Covid-19 to major economies in a global pandemic — now infecting more than 10 million and killing over half a million — also hit demand for China’s exports.

The country is trying to shift its reliance from exports to domestic consumption for growth. With international borders largely closed, the hope is that the billions of dollars spent on foreign tourism last year will now be redirected within China. Official figures estimated that in the first half of last year alone, Chinese tourists spent $127.5 billion overseas, primarily in other parts of Asia.

It’s less certain whether most Chinese consumers have the income and confidence to spend on such a level this year, given the shock of the coronavirus. Retail sales of consumer goods in China for the first five months of the year fell 13.5% from a year ago to about 13.87 billion yuan ($1.95 billion), according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

Chinese travel booking site Ctrip said in a report that the pace of recovery in tourist demand slowed during the latest festival from that seen during two other public holidays in the last three months.

Demand for travel persists

But figures indicate Chinese still want to spend on vacations, even if restrictions made it difficult for travel in and out of the capital city. A two-day jaunt to a nearby destination within the country will also typically cost less than a week-long overseas shopping expedition.

For example:

Airplane ticket searches and bookings for the latest Dragon Boat Festival recovered to 70% of levels seen last year, according to Ctrip.

Reservations for hotels rose 15% in June from the prior month, and more than 60% of travelers booked products from four or five-star hotels, Ctrip said.

Tencent-backed Mafengwo reported an explosion in demand for customized tour packages and local tourist destinations, while noting searches for “camping” and related terms were up 122% in June from the prior month, according to state media.

Shanghai, the southern city of Guangzhou, the southwestern city of Chengdu and Sanya city on Hainan Island were the top four places of departure and arrival for air travel, according to Ctrip.

Shanghai Disney Resort and Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum in the city of Xi’an were among the 20 most popular destinations, according to Ctrip.

McKinsey expects that if all tourism spending shifts to domestic markets, the value gained for China is $238 billion, versus a drop of $52 billion for the United States.

Slow recovery ahead

“We do see that travel will come back,” Steve Saxon, partner at McKinsey, said in a phone interview last week. But it may be at least three years for a full recovery in air travel demand, the firm projects.

“Beijing Daxing and the new Guangzhou Terminal 2 have actually been designed very well for the (internationally) connecting passenger,” Saxon said. “In the next two years, that function will not really be used.”

The travel industry has been dealt another blow as the tri-state area imposes quarantine restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic.

Watch this one stock as an indicator for the rest of the group, said Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak.

“The one stock that I think people should look at very closely because it looks just like the charts of all the other airline stocks and basically most of the other travel and leisure names is Delta Air Lines,” Maley told CNBC’s “Trading Nation” on Thursday. “The sell-off more recently hasn’t taken it to an oversold condition. In fact, it’s quite neutral. So it’s going to have to get a lot more oversold before we really want to back up the truck here.”

Delta’s relative strength index, or RSI, is 45. Any reading below 30 suggests oversold conditions. It last traded with an RSI below 30 in April.

“It got back up above its April highs, that old resistance level became new support, it tested that the support level a couple of weeks ago. It’s now testing it again. It looks like it wants to break through. If it does, the momentum money that’s been hot in these names is going to bail on the stock,” Maley said.

He is not the only market watcher wary of the travel stocks right now.

“We’re pretty much avoiding the space right now. Any time you go into the travel and leisure space … you know it’s high beta, highly volatile. So you really have to buckle up,” said John Petrides, portfolio manager at Tocqueville Asset Management, during the same segment.

Delta, for example, is up 52% from a May low. However, it remains down 58% from last July’s high.

“The airlines could be of interest but we want to see the length and the depth of where Covid round two comes through and how far the government will step in to protect this industry if there is another leg down. So we think there’s way too many exogenous variables that are hard to quantify right now to really step into the trade,” said Petrides.

Delta Air Lines is planning to send notices to warn more than 2,500 pilots next week about potential furloughs, according to a company memo sent Friday that was seen by CNBC.

The carrier and the labor union that represent the carrier’s more than 14,000 pilots has reached an agreement for an early retirement option, a step toward reducing headcount as the coronavirus continues to ravage air travel demand.

“As we’ve communicated previously, early retirements alone likely won’t be enough to avoid pilot furloughs altogether,” said the memo from Delta’s senior vice president of flight operations, John Laughter.

He said that demand has remained weak despite a recent uptick in the number of travelers lately.

“With that in mind and given that we won’t know the results of the early-out for a few weeks, we must continue to move ahead to address pilot overstaffing,” he said. “In an effort to best prepare our pilots, we will send notices to 2,558 pilots as required by the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (the “WARN Act”) next week to let them know of a possible furlough.”

Pilots can apply for the voluntary early retirement program early next month and those accepted will be informed no later than Aug. 4, according to a union memo sent to members on Friday that was also reviewed by CNBC. About 7,900 pilots would be eligible for early retirement, Laughter said.

Airlines are scrambling to reduce their payroll as the pandemic keeps many travelers at home, pushing the industry to its first losses in years. Demand has bounced back somewhat from more than five-decade lows hit in April but it remains a fraction of the norm.

“While it’s encouraging to see flights returning, we expect our overall demand this summer to be only 25 percent of last summer’s revenue, and we likely remain at least two years away from a return to normal,” Delta’s CEO Ed Bastian said in a staff note Thursday.

Particularly impacted is high-revenue international flights, which airlines have largely cut, as a plunge in business trips and travel restrictions made many of those routes impossible. Some of the highest-paid pilots fly planes used for those routes.

Pilots who opt to take early retirement would get pay for 58 hours a month until reaching the age of 65 or for 36 months, whichever is earlier, the union said. The company would also cover up to two years of health insurance premiums and a year of travel benefits.

Delta, the least unionized of the four biggest unionized airlines, offered the rest of its employees early retirement and buyouts last month. American, Southwest and United have also rolled out similar voluntary measures for their staff to reduce costs.

The terms of $25 billion in government payroll support prohibits airlines from laying off or cutting the pay rates of employees through Sept. 30.

Airline executives have said they want to exhaust voluntary measures before turning to involuntary layoffs or furloughs.

Labor unions that represent flight attendants, pilots, mechanics and other airline employees asked Congress on Thursday for billions more in aid to protect their jobs through the end of March 2021.

If the summer of 2020 is memorable to vacationers, it will likely be as the year of not straying too far from home. But that doesn’t mean you need to limit your horizons: The great road trip is enjoying a resurgence.

This year, 46 million Americans say they plan to hit the open road in a recreational vehicle (RV), up from 25 million in 2019, as coronavirus lockdowns force travel lovers to look closer to home for their holiday getaway.

“It is predicted that car travel will be the preferred transportation mode,” Dr. Lynn Minnaert, clinical associate professor at New York University’s Tisch Center of Hospitality, told CNBC of forthcoming travel trends.

And the open road is already beckoning.

Shares of America’s two largest publicly-traded RV companies Winnebago and Thor have jumped 244% and 230%, respectively, from their March lows.

But if the idea of long hours stuck in stuffy traffic jams fill you with dread, think again. Just as the travel industry has evolved over recent years to offer more affordability and tailor-made experiences, it has also paved the way for a host of road trip options.

A route for all travelers

As some travelers shun hotels in the name of social distancing, vacation homes have become an attractive option for many looking for a home away from home.

Airbnb recorded more nights booked for U.S. listings between May 17 and June 3 than during the same period in 2019, with similar domestic demand occurring in Germany, South Korea and New Zealand. In the U.S., half of those trips were located within 200 miles of the traveler’s home location — a journey manageable on one tank of gas — with holiday favorites like Big Bear Lake in California and Port Aransas in Texas dominating the top spots.

Expedia Group’s rental site Vrbo and Booking Holdings has seen a similar uptick in domestic vacation rental reservations. “Every place where you see water in there or mountains or national parks, the homes around it are what’s starting to get booked up,” noted Vrbo’s president Jeff Hurst.

Camping and motor homes, meanwhile, remain a whimsical, short-notice getaway option, noted Minnaert. “Camping … is also expected to become more popular, as well as quieter, less-visited destinations.”

Camping reservation site Campspot saw bookings rise 10% since May, from the lows in March and April, with RVs accounting for the majority (70%) of bookings, followed by cabins (21%) and tents (6%). And, according to Lisa Simeone, principal at Simeone Deary Design Group, many sites are moving quickly to win holidaymakers’ confidence.

“Cleanliness is key, and making sure that guests feel that hygiene is a priority that proprietors are placing an emphasis on, along with outdoor programming, proper social distancing and other safety measures will give travelers the sense of security that is inherent getting back to the joy of travel,” said Simeone.

Luxury lies ahead

That growing demand also means avenues for high-end road-tripping have opened.

“The field is wide open for hospitality providers to offer some really amazing, really groundbreaking concepts,” noted Simeone, who foresees rapid developments in the luxury space, particularly in customizable amenities.

“In-cabin fridges that are stocked ahead of time with only items you selected and pre-ordered from a curated list, and an app that connects you to partnered locals that offer results-driven health and wellness or indulgent spa services, and the perfect transportation services help you get there,” will all be par for the course, she suggested.

Staying safe on- and off-road

Regardless of route and accommodation, assuring appropriate health and safety standards will be top priority for all holidaymakers this summer.

That means ensuring you and your travel companions have a clean bill of health before hitting the road, said Oksana Pyzik, senior teaching fellow at University College London’s School of Pharmacy. “Continue maintaining your distance from others,” she said. “If you or anyone in your family start to feel sick, cancel your travel plans and stay home.”

CNBC Global Traveler spoke to the experts to learn their top tips for staying safe on the road.

Use your own vehicle where possible. When renting, check the company’s cleaning and decontamination processes between customers, said Lisa Lee, associate vice president, research and innovation, at Virginia Tech. “Be sure they use CDC or EPA-approved surface disinfectants and ask for a car that was used and cleaned a day or more ago.”

Bring disinfectant wipes to clean high-touch surfaces. Depending on the surface type, the coronavirus can survive outside of the body for between a few hours and up to a few days. Door handles, steering wheels, rearview mirrors and the trunk are particularly at risk.

Pack hygiene supplies such as masks. These can be handy, not only for yourself but also people you may encounter, such as roadside assistance.

Plan local so you can return home should travel restrictions change.

Research campsites and RV parks ahead of time. Most campsites are communicating how they’re modifying operations, and it’s worth booking spots in advance. If opting for wild camping, look for rural, less populated spots. Travel apps can help with that.

If traveling internationally, check quarantine requirements ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

Try to negotiate contactless check-in. This will help you maintain social distance of 1-2 meters, depending on the local requirements.

If camping for the first time, consider “glamping” to reduce the need for equipment and setup and clear-up.

Avoid traveling with multiple households or large groups. Group bookings are unlikely to be permitted in most areas, in order to reduce risk of transmission, said Pyzik.

Cook your own meals where possible. Most camper van and campsites come equipped with the amenities needed to prepare your own food and maintain social distance.

Maintain social distance in communal areas. Showers, washblocks and game areas are especially high-touch, so come equipped with disinfectant wipes when visiting them.

Come prepared with snacks and drinks to reduce stop-offs en route.

Finally, as states and countries continue to open, and international travel restrictions ease, many of those guidelines will change and further travel options will become available.

Still, with case levels continuing to fluctuate and a Covid-19 vaccine still a long way off, it’s likely that the shift to localized, self-operated travel could last much further down the road.

“Until a safe and effective vaccine is discovered, our fight against coronavirus continues,” noted Pyzik. “And we must not throw away all the hard work and sacrifice made by so many.”

Not too long ago, the airline industry was preparing for a surge in passengers, with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecasting 8.2 billion air travelers in 2037.

But in April, air travel declined 98% from last year as countries closed their borders in efforts to stem the coronavirus pandemic.

“We think airlines are going to probably lose an unprecedented $84 billion in 2020,” Brian Pearce, chief economist for IATA, said in an interview with CNBC. “We’re really only just starting to see countries negotiating bilateral openings of markets. For example, the Trans-Tasman bubble between Australia and New Zealand, China and Singapore, as well as China and Korea.”

Still, Pearce said he expects a recovery in the second half of 2020.

Domestic vs. international travel

While international travel will likely remain volatile for now, countries like China, the U.S. and Indonesia have resumed domestic air travel.

“It will be enough to kickstart the airline industry in some countries,” Pearce said. “For many airlines, they do depend on international air travel.”

Government assistance key to saving airlines

Government aid will be important in ensuring the continuity of airlines, said Keith Mason, head of the Centre for Air Transport Management at Cranfield University.

“We’re going to see a consolidation in the market where airlines that are fully independent are struggling to survive, are going to go out of business,” he said in a CNBC interview.

Some airlines are already displaying significant disruption, including Flybe in the U.K., Virgin Australia and Trans States Airlines in the U.S.

Governments are increasingly offering financial assistance to keep ailing carriers afloat, including the U.S., Australia and Taiwan. IATA predicted that a total of $200 billion in global government support may be needed.

Impact on leisure and business travel

In the past, low-cost carriers increased demand in the leisure travel market, particularly in the Asia Pacific region. Emerging markets like China, India, Indonesia and Thailand were predicted to be among the largest air passenger markets over the next decade.

But the coronavirus pandemic’s financial impact may leave the world with a smaller airline industry. That, in turn, could drive up prices and weaken demand.

Furthermore, the profitability of business travel has deteriorated. Companies that used to depend on air travel to conduct business before the pandemic have found workarounds in video conferencing.

“It’s reasonable to assume that business travel may lose 1 in 5 trips,” Cranfield University’s Mason said.

A roadmap to recovery

As the industry begins to get back on its feet, IATA in partnership with the Airports Council International developed a roadmap recommending the best end-to-end practices for safely resuming flights. This includes contact tracing, the use of personal protective equipment and enabling contactless services at customs, among other measures.

As airlines and airports gear up to resume operations, air travel as we know it will evolve. The challenges underpinning the growth of air travel have only just begun.

Spanish fine-dining powerhouse El Celler de Can Roca was twice named the “World’s Best Restaurant” by Restaurant Magazine. Not to mention the three Michelin stars that it has maintained since 2009.

While the restaurant’s closure due to the coronavirus pandemic ends next week, its new stablemate Casa Cacao is already back in business.

Owned by the acclaimed Roca brothers who also own El Celler de Can Roca — namely Joan, Josep and Jordi — Casa Cacao is, as its name implies, a world-class “house of chocolates.”

A chocolatier and boutique hotel in the heart of Girona

Set in a historic five-story building in downtown Girona that once housed a hostel, Casa Cacao is a bean-to-bar chocolatier operated by Jordi Roca, the youngest brother and current pastry chef of El Celler de Can Roca. Hotel Casa Cacao, a 15-room luxury boutique hotel is located in the same building; it’s managed by Anna Payet, the wife of Joan Roca.

Joan Pujol Creus

Crowned the “World’s Best Pastry Chef” by William Reed Business Media in 2014, Jordi Roca launched Casa Cacao with a trio of chocolate-centric concepts — a workshop where cocoa beans are roasted, fermented and turned into chocolate products of all kinds; a cafeteria where the public can taste them; and a boutique to take special purchases home, some of which are delicately packaged in recycled cocoa fibers.

How chocolate is like wine

“We import cacao beans directly from farmers and communities of six different origins,” said Jordi Roca. Some of the sources include Peru’s indigenous Awajún people, Colombia’s Arhuaco community and Venezuela’s prestigious Hacienda Cacao Caribe farm.

End-to-end involvement in the processing of the cocoa beans, he said, allows his company to control the accents and nuances of the cocoa which reveal different aspects of the “acidity, fruitiness and nuttiness.”

“Chocolate does not need to be sweet or bitter and black or white,” he said. “It can show a wide range of personalities as wines do. We want to bring the taste of real cocoa from different origins to showcase their personalities.”

Redefining the term ‘milk chocolate’

The bean-to-bar concept sells six milk-based chocolate products (three with cow’s milk, two with sheep’s milk and one with goat’s milk) and two specialty chocolate products — one crafted from cocoa beans soaked in Macallan Double Cask whisky and another macerated in tangerine and licorice.

Additionally, guests can buy seasonal chocolates, spreadable creams, chocolate beverages (both hot and cold) and pastries, such as fartons, pain au chocolat and xuixos, the latter a deep-fried Girona specialty filled with crème catalana.

A hotel for chocolate lovers: Hotel Casa Cacao

Casa Cacao shares ground floor space with the reception area of Hotel Casa Cacao, the boutique hotel run by Jordi’s sister-in-law Payet. She is the daughter of a fisherman from the seaside resort town of L’Estartit in Costa Brava and a 26-year hospitality veteran.

“In 1984, I started a tourism degree at the University of Girona, and it was while I was in my third year that I met Joan Roca, then a young chef and teacher, at the hospitality and tourism school,” said Payet, who went on to pursue a teaching career in tourism-related fields.

Given her education and experience helping the family’s businesses on weekends, Payet’s move into hotel management was a natural progression.

With help from Spanish interior design firm Sandra Tarruella Interiors — who also designed the Roca brothers’ beloved Girona ice creamery Rocambolesc which opened in 2012 — Payet has fashioned a space that is bathed in the organic colors of cacao beans at different stages of maturation. Shades of mustard yellow, brown and beige blend with touches of green, which represent cocoa trees, and grey, which reflect the cobblestones-paved streets of Girona.

The best part about a stay

The boutique hotel has 12 junior suites (called Cacao Beans) and three suites (called Cacao Origins) that are decorated with wooden and marble furnishings that were custom-made by local artisans. The ceramic flooring is blanketed by wool carpets handcrafted in Girona, and the walls are a sand-textured surface reminiscent of a zen garden. For maximum comfort, beds are outfitted with Catalan-made 500 thread count organic cotton.

But the highlight of every stay, says Payet, is the breakfast created by her husband Joan which she suggests is best experienced on the rooftop terrace.

“The rooftop terrace is exclusive to hotel guests,” she said. “Here, you can have a leisurely breakfast of locally-crafted produce, while enjoying the panorama of the old city of Girona.”

While Payet is keeping a lid on the breakfast menu designed by her husband, there will be no prizes for guessing whether chocolates make an appearance.

Los Angeles International Airport will start piloting thermal scanning of passengers on Tuesday, a trial that aims to identify passengers with fevers, a symptom of Covid-19, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Monday.

The trial is voluntary and will last at least two months, an airport spokesman said. The scanners will be at Tom Bradley Terminal, which has a high number of international flights, in both departure and arrival areas, Garcetti said.

Departing passengers will be told by staff that they should not travel if they register temperatures of over 100.4 degrees. Arriving travelers will be referred to staff from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention if they register temperatures that high.

“To be clear, these thermal camera temperature checks will not replace other safety measures,” Garcetti said in a webcast. “This is an additional layer of safety.”

The aviation industry is struggling from Covid-19’s devastating impact on air travel, which has pushed airlines to their first losses in years. While air travel has recovered from more than five-decade lows hit in April as states have reopened and summer travel season kicked off, demand is still down about 80% from a year ago, according to data from the Transportation Security Administration.

Airlines have scrambled to come up with ways to ease travelers’ concerns about the virus and to protect crews. While federal officials have recommended face coverings in places where it’s impossible to socially distance, it isn’t a government requirement. Carriers last month started mandating masks for passengers.

They have taken other steps too. For example, budget carrier Frontier Airlines this month started taking travelers’ temperatures and said if they register more than 100.4 or higher they won’t fly. United Airlines, for its part, this month started asking passengers questions about their health as they check in for their flights.

More than 88 million travelers passed through LAX last year, making it the world’s third-busiest airport after Atlanta and Beijing, according to Airports Council International.
