New England has a heavy brew culture, helped along by beer giant The Boston Beer Company, and cemented in American culture by Samuel Adams marketing. In order to set itself apart from other breweries, both large and craft, Trillium looked to other flavor profiles and unique combinations without straying from the region’s history. After evaluation and experimentation, Trillium introduced its landmark brew, the Fated Farmer series. It comes in two recipes — Fated Farmer Pinot Noir and Fated Farmer Seyval Blanc.
“The beers in this series are explorations of how natural agriculture can enhance and accentuate our wild ales — as we continue to produce new batches of Fated Farmer we hope to give a recurring showcase to this concept,” says JC Tetreault, co-founder, Trillium.
The company now touts an impressive array of beer/wine hybrid beverages, which echoes the mission of Trillium — to create brews that are both engaging and approachable.
Here’s a rundown of Trillium’s latest available offerings of these beer/wine hybrid sippers, as well as what makes them notable in a sea of other options.
Fated Farmer Seyval Blanc: Pouring a light straw color out of the bottle with a foamy white head, Fated Farmer Seyval Blanc offers aromatics of citrus zest and bright stone fruit with a faint earthy funk. The wine, though, does not go unnoticed on the palate. The beverage boasts tasting notes of young white wine revealing flavors of mandarin orange, tart quince, and white peach. With a crisp, slightly drying finish, this beer has an 8.2% ABV.
Fated Farmer Pinot Noir: Slightly hazy and with a ruby hue, Fated Farmer Pinot Noir’s red fruit and spice forward aromas make for a pleasant nose. Tasting notes include the flavors of crushed concord grapes and ripe raspberries, which are grounded by a subtle oak character. A soft, slightly tannic finish complements the effervescent carbonation. It has a 7.8% ABV.
Dialed-In Double IPA with Moscato Juice: Newly-released, this brew has aromas of grape, lemon, and light melon. On the palate, however, sippers will taste pineapple, and stone fruit, which is balanced with a vinous notes from the mid-fermentation addition of Moscato juice. It has an 8.5% ABV and a crisp, dry finish.
Dialed-In Double IPA with Sauvignon Blanc Juice: Dry hopped, this version of Dialed-In gives off aromas of fresh squeezed meyer lemon, ripe papaya, lime zest and pineapple, while grapefruit, mango, white peach, and pineapple hit the palate. The beer touts a creamy finish and 8.5% ABV.
Oenobier American Wild Ale with Viognier Juice: Earthy minerality combines with fruit flavors, showcasing the full spectrum of aromas and flavors of Viognier wine. Tangerine, lemon and peach tasting notes complement the floral aromas. A light, effervescent body with a semi-dry finish, this brew has a 10.9% ABV.
Oenobier American Wild Ale with Chardonnay Juice: A finish that tingles both the sour and sweet tastebuds is a highlight of this beer/wine hybrid. Tangy citrus flavors of lemon and lime wash over the palate as notes of bosc pear, dried mango slices and subtle pie crust provide depth. However, aromas of wood and earthiness bring this combination an air of sophistication and complexity that is a treat for the palate. It has an 11% ABV.
